Mozilla Firefox

Recommended Extensions

This is the Recommended Firefox Extensions Page. This page lists all the Firefox Extensions that I can't live without, and why. If the extension name is a link, you can click on it to go to that extension's page at the Official Firefox Extensions Website and find more info about that extension, including how to download it.

All extensions I feel are absolutely essential, I have labelled with a Essential Extension. You can also download and install all the below extensions (or just all essential extensions) in one simple click by going here.

Contents

AdBlock (Addon Homepage) is the best ad-blocking tool Firefox has to offer! The ability to remove unwanted Ad's from webpages is achieved by filtering out unwanted frames and/or images so that you only get the part of the webpage you want to see. You can also filter out unwanted Flash objects!! AdBlock is one of those essential Addons you shouldn't really be without.

BBCodeXtra (Addon Homepage) is not done justice by the short description given above. Imagine this: you are on a forum that uses BBCode, or you are at a form, maybe on a Blogging site, which takes HTML, and you've forgotten that particular tag that does something you want... that's where BBCodeXtra comes in! It adds those HTML and BBCode Tags to the context menu, only a right-click away! You'll never forget how to enter that particular tag again!

ChatZilla (Addon Homepage) is an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Client. Forget all those other IRC clients that cost money and take up extra space in your start menu, and use this completely free AddOn to Firefox instead! This ChatZilla has all the core features of every other IRC client out there, is relatively easy to use and integrates itself completely into Firefox.

Converter (Addon Homepage) is a tool that allows contextual unit and timezone conversion on any web page. The tool supports all the basic measurements and all timezones, and allows you to convert on right click, either on individual coversion or the entire page at a go. The only downside at the time of writing is that it doesn't convert between GB/MB/KB and it's variants... yet.

Del.icio.us (Addon Homepage) is a fantastic way to deal with your bookmarks. Not only does this AddOn make your bookmarks available from any PC anywhere in the world, not only does this AddOn capture and organise all your current bookmarks as easily as it lets you add new ones, but the organisation behind the bookmarks is absolutely brilliant. Each bookmark is saved with a list of tags, word(s) that describe the bookmark that you can make up on the spot. Then, you can search through your bookmarks under the tags you've used to quickly find similar bookmarks. A MUST download, especially for those with loads and loads of bookmarks!!

DownThemAll (Addon Homepage) is the one and only Download Manager and Accelerator that integrates itself inside the Firefox browser! No more external download managers, 100% reliability. It can speed up downloads up to 400% with multiple connections and it allows you to pause/resume downloads anytime! It's fast, reliable, easy to use and completely free, and should be the download manager for every Firefox user.

Firefox Extension Backup Extension (Addon Homepage) does MUCH more then what it says on the tin. Not only does FEBE backup your extensions (and restores them again in individual .xpi files) it also backs up your themes, and optionally, your bookmarks, preferences, passwords, cookies, and nearly everything else Firefox has! And all integrated into Firefox! THE best backup software out there.

FireFTP (Addon Homepage) is a completely free (although you are invited to donate to an orphanage the creator likes) FTP Client that integrates itself within Firefox. It's easy to use 'in a tab' interface allow you to easily connect to remote servers and transfer files. If you're looking for a simple yet effective FTP Client, then look no further then this one. An absolute brilliant program.

Forecastfox (Addon Homepage) is an Addon that allows you to get the weather from any part of the world in the status bar of your Firefox browser. It is fully customisable, from number of days to be forecasted, to the content of the tooltips. If you're interested in the Weather, or just want an easy way of finding out what tommorrow is going to be like, get this Addon.

FoxyTunes (Addon Homepage) is a music player controller that integrates into Firefox. Whaa? Do you listen to music? Do you browse the web with Firefox at the same time? Do you hate having to keep switching between applications to change that song or turn up/down the volume? You don't have to any more!! With FoxyTunes, you can control every major music player that exists (and quite a few minor players too!) The must get add-on for all you music fans out there!

Greasemonkey (Addon Homepage) allows YOU, the viewer, not the website creator, to change how a website looks, feels and acts from within Firefox!! Using bits of Javascript, you can change website behaviour and revolutionise browsing forever!! I currently use two very useful scripts below, just an taster of what Greasemonkey can do! Visit the Addon's Homepage for more information about what Greasemonkey is, and visit the Addon's UserScript Site for what Greasemonkey can currently do for you (don't forget you can always make your own scripts!)

My Greasemonkey Scripts:

  • Currency Convertion - Based off the Yahoo! Currency Converter, this will convert all forms of money on any webpage and place the result next to the monetary text in blue (Example).
  • Greased Lightbox - allows a close up full window view of any picture, and allows you to zoom in or out of the picture easily. Just take a look at the demonstration video and you'll see what I'm talking about!

IETab (Addon Homepage) allows you to have Internet Explorer in your Firefox browser! Have a webpage that doesn't work in Firefox or want to see what a webpage would look like using IE? No problem! A single click, and you can have the security and safety of the Firefox browser with the features of Internet Explorer!! And you can add websites that always view under IE (such as Windows Update). Finally, if you really want to open a website in IE, it also adds "Open in External Application" to the context menu. So you can!

iMacros for Firefox (Addon Homepage) is a fantastic addon! Ever had a task on the web which you did again and again and again, and would've liked to get your web browser to complete for you? Well, now you can! Just perform the operation once, with iMacros watching, and then iMacros will be able to perform the operation everytime you visit. It's never been easier to do the same thing more then once!

Image Zoom (Addon Homepage) Image Zoom allows you to zoom in and out on any image so you can easily and quickly view details at a close-up view. It simply adds a couple of options onto the context menu that allows you to make the image as small or as big as required.

Jeteye (Addon Homepage) is the ultimate research tool. It allows you to capture text, images, sound etc and store them in 'folders' called JetPacks. These JetPacks can then be viewed as a single webpage (which lists all the content you've added to that JetPack), shared with a friend, shared with the world or simply listed as a list in a sidebar on the left of Firefox to easily get at the information you have researched. This AddOn does require you to register for free at JetEye's website (duh! You need an account to store your research so it's available anywhere in the world from any computer!! So stop looking gloomy and go register!)

To find out how to effectively use Jeteye, see this extremely helpful YouTube Video, made by a user of Jeteye.

Master Password Timeout (Addon Homepage) is exactly what it says in the name. After a period of inactivity (such as leaving your computer to do something else or lending your computer to a friend who plays a game), this extension will lock down access to the passwords you store in Firefox, so that you have to re-enter the Master Password again. No more, no less. This extremely simple extension is absolutely essential. A MUST GET!!

PDF Download (Addon Homepage) is a PDF managing extension (NOT a PDF Viewer! You still need either Adobe Reader or similar...) PDF Download gives you the choice of opening the PDF in Firefox, downloading it to your computer, or opening it in your official PDF reader outside of Firefox. The choice is yours!

Print/Print Preview (Addon Homepage) replaces the default Print button with a Print/Print Preview button, that allows you to view your webpages before you print them. This feature is sorely missed in Firefox and is a great benefit all around.

ScrapBook (Addon Homepage) allows you to easily and quickly download and store entire websites for offline viewing. It's your choice as to how much of a particular website you download to your computer, and ScrapBook restructures the links after download to ensure the parts you have downloaded link together perfectly. It also provides the original website location so you can go back and view, and it allows you to edit the offline version so you can anotate the websites. Pretty darn cool.

SpeakIt (Addon Homepage) is the Text-to-Speech addon for Firefox. It will speak anything on any page back to you using Microsofts in-built Text-to-Speech engine, making it reliable and extremely easy to use. Simply go to a page and click it's little yellow face at the bottom of the screen to make it speak an entire page, or highlight some text, right-click and select "Say-It" from the menu, and you'll be listening to your webpages in no time!

Splash (Addon Homepage), best downloaded from the addon homepage, is the tool that will allow you to put a splash screen on loading Mozilla products, such as Firefox, Thunderbird and Flock! A brilliantly simple idea to bring some life into waiting for those programs to load.

Stealther (Addon Homepage) is the ultimate tool for hidden surfing. It temporaily disables (not clears afterwards!) your Browsing History (also in Address bar), Cookies, Downloaded Files History, Disk Cache, Saved Form Information and Sending of ReferrerHeader's, making you temporaily completely hidden from people who want to come and nose around in your history, while keeping the history you want to keep with all your frequently visited sites still there afterwards. Just remember to activate it before you need it!

StumbleUpon (Addon Homepage) allows you to search the web like never before. Once you install this extension (and register an account - FREE!) you will be asked what kind of websites you like to look at. Then, with a single click on the "Stumble" button on it's toolbar, it will pick a random website matching one of your chosen categories and throw it at you. You will be finding websites you never knew existed but are set at your tastes everytime you click that button. Just a warning: don't get distracted! You may end up telling yourself "Just one more stumble..."

Tab Mix Plus (Addon Homepage) adds more features to your tabs then you could throw a stick at. Stop them from being closed, open new ones quickly, open the ones you closed recently, duplicate a tab (including it's history), the added features are endless. This brilliant extension just makes you love Firefox even more then you did before, and as I now really can't live without it, it's one of my essential AddOns which you really must get.

Tab Effect adds a moving effect when a tab is changed, which visually hides one tab and reveals another. This is clearly shown in the picture on the website, and due to the fact that it might be annoying for some people, and the fact that it does slow down Firefox a bit, this addon is the only addon not included in the extension packages below. Still, it is a nice effect, and I like it!

VideoDownloader (Addon Homepage) lets you download videos from YouTube, Google, Metacafe, iFilm, Dailymotion, and other 60+ video sites. It puts a little icon on your status bar which, when clicked, lists all the videos on the current page and lets you pick which ones you want to download. Another simple and effective Addon.

Web Developer (Addon Homepage) adds a menu and toolbar to Firefox packed full with useful features for any website developer. Such features include disabling features in the browser (such as the cache and cookies), displaying information about a particular part of a website, outlining a particular part of a website, viewing the source of a website, and much much much more. For a full list of features, see here.

Wizz RSS News Reader (Addon Homepage) is an integrated RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and Atom News Reader. If you didn't understand any of that, you may have such questions as what is RSS? , Can you introduce RSS to me? , What is Atom? , and What are RSS: and FEED: Links? Otherwise, just have a look at the Addon Homepage for screenshots.

Xinha Here! (Addon Homepage) is your personal, portable, in-built fully working WYSIWYG (What-you-see-is-what-you-get) HTML Editor for all your form-filling HTML needs! Like on Blogger! If you have a form that requires HTML, and you want the easy approach, then this is the tool that will help you with your HTML programming needs, as no matter what site you visit, you'll always have this trusty HTML editor at your side.
