About the Duke of Edinburgh Award

Firstly, I will provide a direct link to the official Duke of Edinburgh Award site.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a voluntary, non-competitive and flexible award scheme aimed at the UK for anyone aged between 14 and 25, which provides a programme of cultural and adventurous activities for all young people, whatever their background or ability.

The Award is broken down into three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level in further broken down into four sections; Skill (covering almost any hobby, skill or interest), Sport (including dance and fitness), Service (helping people in the community) and Expeditions (training for, planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle), with Gold Award having a fifth section of a Residential Project (a purposeful enterprise with people not previously known to the participant).

Purple Group was connected to the Reigate and Redhill Open Award Centre in Surrey, England, for the training and qualification of the Expedition section of the Award. We had practice runs in both Ashdown Forest (Surrey) and the Brecon Beacons (Wales).

Our Qualifying Expedition was in Dartmoor, and this is the Expedition explained out in our diaries and our project. We walked 80km (50 miles) over 4 days and 3 nights, while making our own way across the moor and carrying nothing more or less then what we needed for those 4 long days.

And we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We hope you enjoy reading about our experiences.
